Collection Overview
Papers covering three generations of the Pettigrew family, leaders and landowners in eastern North Carolina, including Charles Pettigrew (1743-1807), teacher, planter, Episcopal minister, and the first bishop-elect in North Carolina, whose papers primarily reflect efforts to revive the Protestant Episcopal church in North Carolina after the Revolution. There are minutes of Episcopal conventions (1790, 1794), church constitution (1794), sermons, hymns, poems, and many letters concerning religion as well as current events. Thomas Paine's writings, UNC, College of New Jersey, and land in Tennessee. Correspondents include Nathaniel Allen, Frederic Beasley, Nathaniel Blount, Solomon Halling, and Bishop William White.
Papers of his son Ebenezer (1743-1848), planter, state senator (1809-1810), and Whig congressman (1835-1837), contain records of the family plantations in Tyrrell and Washington counties, including labor accounts, accounts with Negroes, record of sick Negroes, a "ditching book" (1811-1815), accounts with and letters from commission merchants and mercantile firms, and shipping and freight accounts. Also in his papers are settlements of estates, deeds for land in North Carolina and Tennessee, and letters from agents in Tennessee (1803-1848); items concerning Tyrrell Co. roads and buildings; family accounts on housekeeping, travel, clothing, medicine, books, magazines and newspapers, and schooling; and family correspondence with relatives, especially families of John H. Bryan and Charles and William B. Shepard. Political letters concern his campaign for Congress, internal improvements, establishment of a marine hospital, French spoliation claims, the national bank, abolitionism, and presidential candidates. Correspondents include Congressmen William B. and Charles Shepard, Edward Stanly, and James A. Pearce; Henry Clay discussing his defeat in the presidential election (1845); James Iredell, Jr., at Princeton (1803-1806); constituents; neighbors such as Thomas B. Haughton and Thomas Trotter; and friends in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Also included is a printed petition to Congress on "steam aerial navigation" (1842).
Ebenezer's son James Johnston Pettigrew (1828-1863) studied law under James L. Petigru in South Carolina, where he was a legislator and aide to Gov. R. F. W. Allston, later becoming Confederate brigadier general. His correspondence with Ambassador D. M. Barringer concerns traveling in Spain (1850-1852) and annexation of Cuba; and there are letters and printed material on the state and national Democratic conventions (1856) and on his work in the S.C. legislature (1856-1858) for court revision and against revival of the slave trade, with his minority report on the latter. There are records and correspondence on his organization of the First [S.C.] Regiment of Rifles (1860) and its role in the defense of Charleston; records kept as a colonel, 12th Regt. NCT, concerning ordnance supplies in Raleigh (1861), soldiers' death certifications, and his capture at Seven Pines; sketches of terrain in Virginia; and letters, orders, maps, reports, and list of casualties in campaign to recapture New Bern (1863). There are also reminiscences and articles about him after his death at Gettysburg. His correspondents include James Conner, Wade Hampton, W. W. Holden, W. Porcher Miles, James L. Orr, James L. Petigru, David L. Swain, Zebulon B. Vance, and a relative in the Federal navy. Papers of his brother William S. Pettigrew (1818-1900) include draft opinions on issues before the N.C. Secession Convention of 1861. Many of the early papers have been published in Sarah McCulloh Lemmon (ed.), The Pettigrew Papers, vol I, 1685-1818 (Raleigh, 1971). Other Pettigrew papers are in the Southern Historical Collection, UNC.
