Collection Overview
Journal (Apr.-Aug., 1815) by Susan D. Nye of Amenia, N.Y., describing her journey by sea and stage to Raleigh via New York, Wilmington, and Fayetteville; and social events during her first weeks in charge of the Female Department of Raleigh Academy. Reference to families of Rev. William McPheeters, Rev. Josiah Crudup, Judges William Shaw and Henry Potter, Justice John L. Taylor, and Joseph Gales; also Col. William Polk, William Gaston, Dr. Battle, Mr. Newcomb, Mr. Devereux, and Mr. Glendenning. School examinations, and encounters with slaves and the poor in Raleigh are also described. An abridged typescript of this volume includes extracts from diaries kept in Augusta (1826-1834) after her marriage to Adam Hutchison of Georgia and in Amenia, Salisbury, and Charlotte as widow and teacher (1836-1841).
