Papers of Nunn of New Bern, president of Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad Company (1916), superior court judge (1926-1931), county historical society president, and chairman of county board of education. General correspondence with Nunn (1898-1940) concerns the N.C. Naval Militia (1911); opposition by prominent North Carolina women to the Nineteenth Amendment (1920); the Southern Historical Collection at UNC (1934); privateer Otway Burns; and old homes, early printing, and historic and current events in New Bern (1922-1940). There is also material on Samuel M. Brinson, Joseph Rodman Drake, William Gaston, Matthias Manly, Josiah Martin, and bankruptcy of Appleton Oaksmith (Carteret Co., 1877). Earlier letters include one (1834) from John L. Taylor to John Y. Mason about their student days at UNC, and advice against accepting Confederate money (1864). Also grants and deeds in Craven, Dobbs, Jones, and Lenoir counties (1757-1883); family receipts, accounts, and slave deed of gift (1786-1874); Lenoir Co. estate paper of Edward Williams (1874), and comments on places and street names in New Bern. Printed matter includes political campaign material about Charles Shepard (1838), Furnifold M. Simmons (1912), Samuel M. Brinson (1918, 1920), Huey P. Long (1932), Clyde R. Hoey (1936), Marion Butler (n.d.), demonetization of silver (1885), and woman suffrage (1920); articles, speeches, and minutes on the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad Co. (1854-1963); charters and acts for East Carolina Land and Railway Co. (1887, 1889), town of New Bern (1885-1936), and New Bern Academy (1816, 1866); broadsides about Reconstruction and about local government finance (1876-1887); and sermon on the Negro (1908).
