Collection Overview
Papers of ten families of central and eastern North Carolina, and miscellaneous papers. Isenhour family papers (Anson, Cabarrus, and Rowan counties, 1753-1907) include land papers, apprentice bond (1796), accounts, will, and estate papers, (1843-1846) of Michael and Barbara Isenhour, a few letters (1863-1864), bylaws of Coal Chute Farmers' Alliance of Cabarrus Co. (n.d), and items relating to North Carolina College at Mt. Pleasant (1891-1892) and to Evangelical Lutheran Church, Enochsville (1869, 1891). Papers of Edmund Barrier and family (1840-1872) include Cabarrus Co. land papers, court papers, tax receipts, militia exemption (1862), Freedmen's Bureau order (1865), labor contract (1867), and Rowan Co. subscription for teacher (1863).
Papers (1833-1926) of attorney Samuel H. Webb of Orange and Alamance counties are primarily letters (1870-1926) from business associates A. W. Graham of Oxford and E. H. Williamson of Fayetteville and from Walter Clark, W. A. Graham, Jr., W. L. Holt, Thomas B. Womack, and others about University of Virginia (1870, 1884), gold, copper, and soapstone mining, cotton manufacturing, politics (1880-1898 mainly), Gattis-Kilgo trial (1901), W. R. "Sawney" Webb and his school in Tennessee (1873-1926), Congressman Richard Stanford (d. 1816), and conditions and unions in New York (1919). Also Orange Co. deeds (1833-1877) and estate papers (1893); and items relating to Hartford Academy (1854), Horner's School (1867), UNC (1867), Laurinburg High School (1881), and Trinity College (1896). McAden papers (1900-1909) mainly concern John H. McAden's general store in Caswell Co.: correspondence with manufacturers and suppliers in Virginia, bills, advertisements, and agency agreements. Also a Caswell Co. deed (1800), and letters about Mexican War pensions (1906) and Hugh McAden family history. There are accounts, receipts, deeds, and slave bills of sale belonging to the Samuel Daniel family of Prince George Co., Va., and Northampton Co. (1818-1844); Civil War and other items from the James Sauls family of Wake Co. (1860-1876) and Isaac D. Farmer family of Wilson Co. (1863-1866); letters and teachers' certificates of the Yarbrough family of Danville, Va., and Person Co. (1860,1900-1908); and miscellaneous papers of the Maurice Bill family of Fayetteville (1897-1917). Letters (1862-1929) to C. H. Culver, lumberman in Oregon and later farmer in North Carolina Co., and friends concerning railroads and politics in North Carolina (1870) and lumber business in Oregon and Washington Territory (1873).
A group of Civil War papers include letters to Martha Singleton (no address given) from soldiers and relatives; monthly returns (1862) and miscellaneous records of 12th Regt. NCT; and two drafts of two petitions, one to Governor Ellis from Halifax Light Infantry about their quarters (1861), and one from North Carolina prisoners of war to former Governor Swain in Washington, D. C. (1865?). Miscellaneous papers include a Mecklenburg Co. land grant (1773), Robert Maitland estate sale (1834), and fragment of Person Co.(?) teacher's diary, with pupils' names (1856) and summaries of Methodist sermons. Also article by Rebecca Cameron (1895) on "Christmas at Buchoi Plantation," on the lower Cape Fear River, with description of "John Coonah" celebration by slaves; anti-imperialist article by Mark Twain (1901); pamphlets on health and agriculture; political circulars (1906-1918) and advertisements
