Photocopies of material in the Draper Manuscripts, State Historical Society of Wisconsin, selected from the Croghan Papers (1789-1814), Frontier Wars Manuscripts (1778-1791), Kentucky Papers (1768-1855), Kings Mountain Papers (1776-1826), North Carolina Papers (1776-1818), Preston Papers (1757-1780), Sumter Papers (1774-1792), Tennessee Papers (1774-1811), and Virginia Papers (1758-1793). Items copied generally concern the western settlements in Tennessee and Kentucky before, during, and after the American Revolution, and relations with the Indians from 1758 to 1793, and in 1812. Specific topics include Richard Henderson and the Transylvania Company; defense of settlements in Tennessee and Kentucky; fighting the Cherokee, Chickamauga, Creeks, and others; negotiation of treaties and boundaries with Indians (1770-1791); representation of western settlers; the state of Franklin; cession of Tennessee land by North Carolina; loyalists in western North Carolina and confiscated land; the Catawba Company (1790). Included are correspondence, journals, treaties (1770, 1785, 1786, 1791), maps, speeches, petitions, articles of agreement, court papers about western land, and inventory of government's Indian goods (n.d.). The North Carolina Papers are largely papers of Col. Waightstill Avery, including diary recording brush with Regulators (1769); diary and notebook (1776- 1777) mentioning courts, travels, Council of Safety, and Cherokee; instructions from Mecklenburg Co. to representatives at Provincial Congress about form of government and legislation (1776); comments on freedom of election (1776); address to grand jury on court system (1777); proclamation to loyalists by Gen. William Caswell (1781); and some appointments and correspondence of Avery. Also letters to Lyman Draper from Silas McDowell about the Revolution in western North Carolina and about Cherokee legends (1874-1875).
