Biographical/Historical
Whitmel (sometimes spelled Whitmell) Thomas Sharrock was born in Bertie County, NC,
around 1810, the son of Samuel Sharrock (1774-1819) and Mary Saunders Lee Sharrock
(1772-1848). Whitmel's grandfather, Thomas Sharrock, had likely been born in England
around 1741, but in 1756 was apprenticed to Richard Taylor of Norfolk, Virginia to
learn the trade of a carpenter and joiner. In 1766, Thomas purchased 125 acres of
land in Northampton County, NC. The previous year, he had married Bathsheba Daughtry,
and the couple had a total of 11 children, including Samuel, who in the 1798 Bertie
County tax list was described as, a single male with no land or slaves. By 1800 however,
Samuel seems to have gotten married, and is listed as having 250 acres (that Mary
Saunders Lee Sharrock inherited from her first husband Lemuel Lee, who had died in
1799) and 3 slaves. Through purchase and inheritance, over the next few years Samuel
gained more land, and the 1819 tax list (compiled after Samuel's death that year)
shows him owning 1000 acres.
Samuel and Mary had a total of five children, and at the time of Samuel's death, their
ages ranged from 8 to 18, with Whitmel being the youngest. Mary continued to buy land
after Samuel's death, as did Whitmel, who also purchased enslaved people, and the
1850 census listed 25 enslaved people, aged 1 to 90, under Whitmel's name.
Whitmel married twice. His first wife was Susannah Spivey, with whom he had one child,
a daughter named Sarah Winifred. Susannah died c.1838 and Whitmel subsequently married
Margaret Cross Horne, and they had five daughters, including Margaret Otelia Sharrock,
the mother of Francis Speight who donated this collection to the State Archives of
NC.
Whitmel's daughter Sarah Winnifred, married Samuel Hyman Gill, and moved to Tennessee.
When the couple moved, Samuel Gill left the Gill family papers with his father-in-law
Whitmel, who also received records belonging to Margaret Cross Horne's father, Turner
Horne when he died in1847. These included records from Turner Horne serving as executor
for numerous estates.
Whitmel Sharrock died in Bertie County on November 13, 1870, leaving his estate to
his wife and daughters.
