Collection Overview
Papers of Scott of Haw River in Alamance Co., commissioner of agriculture (1936-1948), governor (1949-1953), and U.S. senator (1954-1958), and of his wife Mary White Scott. Scott's personal papers include NC A&M yearbook (1917); a few items relating to his army service (1918) and to his father Robert W. Scott; and correspondence (1936-1954) about crops, livestock, dairy, problems of farm labor, finances, his job as commissioner of agriculture, his connections with Hawfields Presbyterian Church and Glade Valley School, and interest in community improvements and roads, with letters from or about family members. Scott's campaign correspondence, contributors' list (1948), speeches and radio broadcasts, and literature relate to elections from 1936 to 1954; and there are scripts from his series of radio talks (three times weekly, 1953-1954). Papers of Governor Scott include his inaugural and other speeches, office register (1949), a small amount of correspondence, and material relating to social engagements, and the Sir Walter Cabinet. Most of the collection consists of Senator Scott's correspondence with his constituents, with other senators and congressmen, and with federal and state agencies, much concerning problems of individual veterans, immigrants, federal prisoners, welfare cases, and applicants for jobs or entrance to military academies. Scott was a member of Senate committees on agriculture and forestry, interior and insular affairs, and post office and civil service; and letters about pending legislation concern those subjects as well as desegregation, federal judgeships, tariffs and taxes, social security, health insurance, disaster insurance, minimum wage, Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the Bricker Amendment, roads, federal aid to school construction, foreign aid, and flood control and navigation projects. Also questionnaires on issues, filled out by constituents (1956), and some Senate speeches. Papers of Mary White Scott include her autobiography; some personal correspondence (1949-1972); manuscript about renovation of Executive Mansion (1949-1953); letters and papers of her children, including Gov. Robert W. Scott II; and additions to her will. Also scrapbooks of clippings about Gov. and Mrs. Scott, 1949-1958. Family papers include letter from David W. Kerr, student at Caldwell Institute (1838); and original and typed copies of letters from Mrs. Scott's mother, Eliza Sellars, at Greensboro Female Institute (1879-1880).
