Papers of Confederate brigadier general James B. Gordon (1822-1864), including his letters describing the legislature of 1850 and Raleigh social life, friends in Wilkesboro (1853), election of 1854, Democratic National Convention of 1856 in Cincinnati, St. Louis in 1857, and life as cavalry officer in Virginia (1861) and at Kinston (1862). From Maj. Montfort Stokes, Thomas L. Clingman, and others are letters describing Mexican War volunteers, officers, and events (1847); a Wilkes Co. flood; Clingman's campaign against the Know-Nothings (1855); and law practice and politics in Arkansas (1860). Papers of his brother-in-law Dr. R. F. Hackett include letters about elections (1852, 1856), one from Governor Bragg; printed letter from D. L. Swain about collection of early records and writing of county histories (1857); appointment as delegate to American Medical Association meeting (1859); and letters about war preparations in Arkansas (1861), prison life on Johnson's Island (1864), and from Lyman C. Draper (1881) about Daniel Boone and the soldiers at Kings Mountain. Papers (1833-1856) of Wilkesboro lawyer A. A. Scroggs relate to Revolutionary and War of 1812 pensions, with letters from Congressman David S. Reid (1844) and others and affidavits of service and marriage. Miscellaneous items include slave bills of sale; letters (1850-1851) concerning the Sons of Temperance; Wilkes Co. election results, 1854; Methodist license to exhort (1856); letter from North Carolinian in Texas to D. L. Swain (1858); common school report (Wilkes Co., 1858); census naming 20 indigent wives of soldiers, Wilkes Co. (1863); printed military orders concerning office-holding and stay laws (1867); and pictures and biographical information on General Gordon, including Carolina and the SouthernCross (Kinston, N.C.), Aug., 1913, on soldiers from Wilkes Co. in the Civil War.
