Papers of Stokes, major general in War of 1812, U.S. senator (1816- 1823), and governor (1830-1832). Letters (primarily 1800-1811) include many to Stokes as lawyer and clerk of Salisbury District Court and Rowan Co. Superior Court about court cases. Letter from former Tennessee sheriff William Phillips, a prisoner in Salisbury jail, encloses note from John Sevier (1809) and letters from distressed wife in White Co., Tenn. (1810-1811). Other letters are from Sen. Jesse Franklin on disputed presidential elections (1800); from Duncan Cameron on the state judicial system (1807); from Jesse A. Pearson, prior to duel (1810); and one about Ohio land sales (1810). Also slave bills of sale (1790), judgments on three cases in the N.C. Court of Con- ference (1802), and draft of petition to General Assembly for manumission of slaves in compliance with Iredell Co. will of Col. Alexander Worke (d. 1806).
