    Collection Overview

"Memories of the Past," by Mrs. Lillie Lea Neal (b. 1845) of Leasburg in Caswell Co., daughter of Solomon Lea, who was first president of Greensboro Female College and head of Somerville Female Institute in Leasburg (1848-1861). Reminiscences concern her father, her own education, and her teaching experiences in many places, notably Leasburg, Rocky Mount, Ansonville, Rome, Ga., and Marshall Co., Miss. Also recalled are her travels in America and Europe, relatives, marriage in 1894 to T. C. Neal, death of stepson in WWI, and family problems. Memorandum book (1855-1910) of Stephen Neal contains lists of slaves with birth and death dates, orchard records, and recipes; and there is a volume of workers' accounts (1880-1881).
