Collection Overview
Letter book of General Gates, July 21, 1780-Oct. 7, 1781, concerned with his assuming command of the Southern Department from Gen. Benjamin Lincoln in July, the Battle of Camden (Aug. 16) and subsequent rout, deficiencies of the southern army, his replacement by Nathanael Greene in December, and his efforts to have an official inquiry conducted. Addressees include boards of war in Philadelphia and North Carolina; Congress; Generals Washington, Greene, Lincoln, Isaac Huger, Griffith Rutherford, Daniel Morgan, and William Caswell; Gov. Abner Nash and governors of Virginia and Maryland; and Peter Mallett, Martin Armstrong, William Blount, Thomas Polk, Robert Rowan, Benjamin Cleveland, and the officer in charge of Kings Mountain prisoners.
