    Collection Overview

Papers of Moore of Nash Co. and Raleigh, lawyer, legislator, attorney general (1848-1851), and commissioner for revising and printing the statutes of N.C. (1851-1855). His letters to daughter Lucy Catherine, 1851-1877, concern family matters, with comments on the folly of secession, evils of the Civil War, difficulty of postwar adjustments, conflict between state supreme court and the bar, and impeachment of Gov. William W. Holden. Letter to son-in- law Dr. P. T. Henry gives reasons for his opposition to proposed state constitution (1868). Included also are obituaries of members of the Crudup family; reminiscences of Moore's father James (1765-1851) concerning his service aboard privateer Hannah of Edenton, 1781; and biographical sketches of Moore and his children. See also P.C. 775.
