    Collection Overview

Papers of John Buxton Williams, Warren Co. planter, who married Temperance Hilliard in 1843, and their daughter Temperance who married John A. Dameron in 1876. Family letters (1833-1942) contain references to home and school activities, religion (Methodist), fashion, and music. Antebellum letters include several from students (Salem Academy, 1833; St. Mary's Hall, N.J., 1845-1846; and UNC, 1860). Civil War letters are chiefly descriptions from Harry Williams, 2nd Co. C, 12th Regt. NCT, of camp life, battle of the Merrimack and Monitor, evacuation of Norfolk, and battle of Hanover Court House, with letter (1862) about his death at Malvern Hill. A letter (Feb. 15, 1866) from Mrs. Clement Claiborne Clay of Alabama describes her husband's imprisonment with Jefferson Davis at Fortress Monroe, and other postwar letters concern renewed social life during Reconstruction and Dameron's insurance business. There are three letters from (Gov.) Elias Carr, Williams's former ward (1855, 1894, 1895) and many from Julia M. Dameron at N.C. State Normal and Industrial College, Greensboro, 1895-1896, and from Josie (Judith) Dameron, concert singer and, after 1925, missionary in Korea. Also included are accounts for estates of Jonas J. Carr (1843-1856) and George W. Alston (1853- 1865); account book of John A. Dameron (1878-1901); daybooks, post office account book, and vital statistics for David and Gray Sills families of Nash Co. (1774-1914); and an antebellum manuscript music book.
