Collection Overview
Four series of papers from the Draper Manuscripts, State Historical Society of Wisconsin, which are chiefly notebooks of the historian Draper containing his notes, copies of documents, original papers, printed material, and his correspondence with participants or their descendants and with local historians. The Kings Mountain Papers concern Revolutionary War in the western Carolinas, especially the Battle of Kings Mountain, with details about warfare, topography, traditions, and biography and genealogy of its heroes. They also concern Cherokee Indians and trans-Appalachian settlements and include some original papers of Col. Arthur Campbell of Virginia, Evan and Isaac Shelby, John Sevier, and Andrew Hampton. "Mecklenburg Declaration" is a completed manuscript by Draper, and Mecklenburg Declaration Papers and Miscellanies relate to the alleged declaration of independence (May 20, 1775), lives of the supposed signers, and published material. The Rudolph-Ney Papers are largely correspondence about the lives of schoolteacher Peter Stewart Ney, who died in Iredell Co. in 1846, Napoleon's Marshal Michel Ney (1769-1815), and Revolutionary soldier Michael Rudolph, examining the theory that all three were the same person. The North Carolina Papers include original and transcribed papers (1767-1818) of Waightstill Avery and correspondence (1873-1874) with Silas McDowell about the Cherokee campaign of 1776, including sketch maps.
