Collection Overview
Journal of Finlay, surveyor of the post roads on the continent of North America, September, 1773 to June, 1774. The first 14 pages describe his journey from Quebec down the Kennebec River in Maine to Falmouth [Portland] seeking a practical post road into New England. The balance of the journal describes post roads, post offices, postmasters, and riders from Falmouth to Savannah with suggestions for improving the service. While in North Carolina (Jan. 16-May 17, 1774), Finlay notes roads, ferries, personnel and facilities for handling mail in Wilmington, Brunswick, New Bern, Edenton, Halifax, and Bath. He comments especially on the work of deputy postmasters William Hooper of Wilmington, Joseph Hewes at Edenton, as well as William Dry's poor road across Eagle Island in the Cape Fear River, and the problems at Brunswick. A chart shows mileage and number of days from Georgetown, S.C., through North Carolina to Suffolk, Va. Film purchased from the National Archives.
