Collection Overview
The Historic Preservation Photographs collection is comprised of photographic negatives
created by the Survey and Planning Unit (formerly the Survey and Planning Branch)
of the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (HPO). The images are of
historic structures, districts, and sites investigated by Survey and Planning.
Beginning in 1980, these negatives were transferred from HPO to the State Archives
of North Carolina's Audio Visual Materials Unit (formerly the Iconographics Collection
and then the Non-Textual Materials Unit) to be interfiled into the General Negative
Collection. Metadata concerning these images were created through a coordinated effort
between HPO and the State Archives. The General Negative Collection is indexed by
an item-level file numbering system.

Negatives are interfiled into a single file numbering system within the Special Collections
Audio Visual Materials Unit's General Negative Collection.
