Abstract

This collection contains 95 black and white photographs taken by David Stone Hicks, Jr. between 1923 and 1929. Chiefly, the collection depicts bridge projects in eastern North Carolina while Hicks was employed as a Civil Engineer with the North Carolina Highway Commission. This collection also includes several photographs of residences in New Bern, old Clinton County Courthouse, Sudan Temple in New Bern, views of Neuse River, Bogue Sound Pier and unidentified men recreationally fishing, both white and Black.

This collection contains 95 black and white photographs taken by David Stone Hicks, Jr. between 1923 and 1929. Chiefly, the collection depicts bridge projects in eastern North Carolina while Hicks was employed as a Civil Engineer with the North Carolina Highway Commission. These photographs depict the construction process and completed projects including smaller bridges spanning small creeks and swamps. This collection also includes several pictures of residences in New Bern, old Clinton County Courthouse, Sudan Temple in New Bern, views of Neuse River, Bogue Sound Pier and unidentified men recreationally fishing, both white and Black.

Biographical/Historical

David Stone Hicks, Jr. was born in Brunswick County Virginia in 1869 and died in 1932. He was a civil engineer employed by the North Carolina Highway Commission in the early 1920s. Hicks was the son of Judge David Stone Hicks, Sr. and Martha Eleanor Hicks of Brunswick County, Virginia.
