Biographical Note
Fleetus Lee Gobble (1891-1961), Democrat, was born in Davidson County to John H. and
Frances Foster Gobble. A barber by profession and businessman, Gobble operated two
shops in Winston-Salem, was president of the Winston-Salem Barber College, owned a
school of beauty culture (cosmetology), and was active in barber professional organizations.
He was married to Blanche Evans in 1913, and the couple had three children.
In 1941 Gobble was first elected to the state House of Representatives from Forsyth
County and served continuously, with the exception of the 1947 session, until his
sudden death in Raleigh on March 1, 1961, while the legislature was in session.
Gobble's legislative service totalled twenty years. At that time of his death, Gobble
was chairman of the House Enrolled Bills Committee. He had also served for several
sessions on the subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. He was appointed
by Governor Luther H. Hodges to the Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem
State University) Board of Trustees, 1955-June 30, 1959.
Gobble had tree children: Juanita, Dr. Fleetus L. Jr.; and James F.
