Collection Overview
Margaret B. Mizelle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Mizelle of Route 2, Windsor,
N.C., was born June 28, 1918, graduated from Windsor High School in 1936, and subsequently
graduated as a registered nurse from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing,
Charlotte, N.C. Shortly after the United States entered World War II, Ms. Mizelle
volunteered for service in the Army Nurse Corps on April 24, 1942. Commissioned a
2nd lieutenant, she was assigned to duty with the 38th Evacuation Hospital, then at
Fort Bragg, N.C., which shipped overseas to England in August. After a quarter year
in England, the 38th Evacuation Hospital was sent in November, 1942, to serve on the
front in Northwest Africa, Northeast Africa, and North Africa for the next ten months.
From here the hospital was shipped to Italy in September, 1943. Lt. Mizelle was reassigned
duties in the continental United States, returning in February, 1945. She was demobilized
on January 25, 1946.
The letters in this collection date from July 23, 1942, to December 28, 1944, and
were, all but two of them, written while Lt. Mizelle was on duty overseas. They were
addressed for the most part to Mrs. Mizelle at Windsor, and frequently are concerned
with articles of clothing, cosmetics, or food that Lt. Mizelle wished sent to her
from home. Occasionally the letters contain descriptions of life in the field (Dec.
16, 1942; Oct. 5 and 27, 1943; Jan. 6, Aug. 30, and Nov. 7, 18, and 24, 1944), or
efforts to celebrate Christmas at the front in the evacuation hospital (Dec. 29, 1943,
and Dec. 23 and 28, 1944). There are no letters dating from 1945 or 1946 in the collection.
