Abstract
Daniel L. [Lindsay] Russell (1845-1908) served as governor of North Carolina from
1897 to 1901. He was a member of the class of 1863/64, University of North Carolina.
The volume contains the autographs of 70 schoolmates in the war classes at the university,
most of whom went to war, and on all of whom (even those no longer living) the university
conferred ex speciali gratia the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1911. Dates of entries
are from 1861-1863. The volume also contains the autographs of three soldiers at Fort
Caswell and Fort Fisher in 1863.

Collection Overview
Autograph book of Governor Daniel L. Russell (1845-1908) while a member of the class
of 1863/64 in the University of North Carolina. The volume contains the autographs
of 70 schoolmates in the war classes at the university, most of whom went to war,
and on all of whom (even those no longer living) the university conferred ex speciali
gratia the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1911. The volume contains, too, the autographs
of three soldiers collected by Russell while commanding Russell's Battery, 2nd North
Carolina Artillery, at Fort Caswell and Fort Fisher in 1863.
Information included in the university autograph entries: name, Greek fraternity;
membership in which debating society (Dialectic or Philanthropic) residence, birthdate,
profession, class designation, motto, and, sometimes, the forename or initials of
sweetheart. To these entries Governor Russell subsequently. entered in pencil such
additional information as he learned about the students, such as nickname, number
of army regiment, date and place of death, occupation, noteworthy activity while a
student, and so forth. Many of the autographs have no additional information gathered
by Governor Russell.
Consists of one octavo volume, autographs (containing 84 leaves (8 of them blank)
bound in crushed morocco spine and boards decorated with gold tooled panels, and title,
Autographs, in gold on spine and on both boards. Manufactured by J. B. Lippincott
& Co., Philadelphia.)

Biographical Note
Daniel L. [Lindsay] Russell (1845-1908) served as governor of North Carolina from
1897 to 1901. He was a member of the class of 1863/64, University of North Carolina.
Russell's studies were cut short when he left to join the Confederate Army. During
the war, Russell commanded Russell's Battery, 2nd North Carolina Artillery, at Fort
Caswell and Fort Fisher in 1863.
